Rise-Up program
Patents2Products

What is Patents2Products?
Patents2Products is a year-round fellowship program that engages trainees (graduate students, postdocs, faculty) to broaden their commercial skillset; learning innovation and entrepreneurship, and to acquire the necessary tools for accelerating the traction and impact of their innovations, including creating new dual-use supply chain companies. The program recruits highly motivated trainees with strong technical backgrounds and entrepreneurial aspirations, and trains them to focus on translational research, development, and commercialization of dual-use solutions. Under the direction of their faculty advisors and with the support of the RISE-UP team, fellows work collaboratively with industry partners and engage with Rhode Island’s entrepreneurship ecosystems, helping to transform innovative ideas and intellectual property, including those developed at URI, into successful ventures. P2P offers a funded position for research entrepreneurs in training who aspire to build successful startups. The curriculum for the program is tailored to the fellow’s area of research and experience in relation to the startup opportunity.
P2P seeks motivated individuals with strong scientific, technical, and entrepreneurial backgrounds. The program emphasizes translational research and commercialization, providing a structured framework that leads to practical outcomes in product development.
Fellows are required to have a faculty sponsor and to select one of two possible tracks.

Track 1 is for P2P Fellows that wish to work in lab research groups with existing institutional intellectual property currently in product development.
Fellows that do not have a developed business model or minimum viable product (MVP) are encouraged to select this track.

P2P Fellows in product development that wish to work on research assignments to build entrepreneurial skills with support from real-world, URI-affiliated entrepreneurs and companies will select Track 2.
The outcome of Track 2 is focused on the translation of early-stage technologies to high-growth companies.
